DIY Decor For Kid’s Rooms

Decorating a kiddies bedroom can be expensive when it comes to adding fun accessories, that’s why we have put together a selection of DIY decor crafts and projects that you can do in a day (or on a weekend) to add colour and interest to any child’s bedroom.

Put your DIY skills to good use and start making small pieces of furniture and accessories. This adorable wall-mounted dressing table is perfect for a little girl’s bedroom and you can make a matching stool. The dressing table can be made using 16mm PG Bison Supawood – it’s a simple rectangular box with a slide in drawer.

Recycle tin cans into a colourful hanging display for a child’s bedroom. They can even do this project themselves during the holidays. All you need to do is drill a 3mm hole in the bottom of the can for threading through a piece of wool with a large knot at the end. An embroidery hoop is wrapped with matching wool with threads taken up to a hook screwed into a ceiling beam.

Grabbing a can or two of paint – or Rust-Oleum chalkboard spray – is a quick and easy way to add colour and interest to a child’s bedroom.

Pretty bird boxes provide a practical and adorable storage option for walls. Paint them in pretty colours, or add wrapping paper or fabric with spray adhesive.

You can make your own bird boxes using a variety of timber or board. We made ours using 12mm PG Bison SupaWood and then painted it in shades of blue and green before adding a decorative pattern with white paint

It’s so easy to add a fun element with fabric and embellishments. Make up these over-stuffed cushions with gingham fabric and then trim with lace, ribbon, a felt heart and colourful buttons. Print out and enlarge the design below as a template.

Be creative with walls for a nursery or children’s bedroom. There are so many ways to add a feature wall using wallpaper, wall decals, or paint.

ABOVE: You don’t need to be super-artistic to add this teddy mural to the wall. Draw your design using chalk, so that you can easily wipe off any boo-boos. Use a thin paintbrush and Plascon Polvin tinted in your choice of colour to paint on the design.

Another inexpensive way to add interest to walls is with framed art. You can make up your own affordable picture frames with pine moulding and trim that you will find at your local Builders Warehouse and save even more by having your glass cut to size while in the store. Use your PC printer to print out unique art, or simply frame a piece of colourful patterned fabric or wrapping paper.
